Education PPP: Work has begun on The Highland
Council's second Public Private Partnership, which will see 11 new urban and
rural community schools built across the Highlands at a cost of £134 million.

Councillors Oppose Overhead Transmission Lines:
At a special meeting of The Highland Council’s Planning, Development, Europe
and Tourism Committee, Councillors
objected to an application from Scottish and Southern Energy plc for the
erection of a 400 kV overhead transmission line between Beauly and Denny. The
matter will now be subject to a Public Inquiry.

New Appointment: Richard Hartland, has been
appointed as Head of Planning and Building Standards. He is currently
Development Control and Building Standards Manager with West Lothian Council.
His is due to commence work in his new post in June.

Lochaber Futures: We intend to prepare a replacement
of the Lochaber Local Plan comprising the Lochaber Area and that part of the
south west of the Badenoch and Strathspey Area, outwith the Cairngorms National
Park. Views are sought by Friday 9th June 2006.

2nd Education PPP2 Signed: The Highland Council has signed an agreement
confirming the biggest building programme to be undertaken by a local authority
in the Highlands, including Scotland's first purpose-built Gaelic school.
More Budget Briefing 2006/2007: The Budget Brief booklet for 2006/07 is now available here. This gives a summary of the Council's income and expenditure for the coming financial year broken down by Service, together with Facts and Figures about the Council. Smoking Ban: Two officers have been appointed by The Highland Council to "police" the ban on smoking in enclosed areas, which took effect in the early hours of Sunday morning (26 March). Longman Estate, Inverness Draft Development Brief: The Highland Council
has prepared a Draft Development Brief to guide regeneration at the core of the
Longman Estate, Inverness and invites written comments, to be received by Friday

Registration of Private Landlords: By 30th April 2006 landlords letting
properties in Scotland should either be registered or have submitted a valid
application for registration.
