USE: IMMEDIATE ISSUED: Tuesday, 24 May 2005 RANGER WALK DISCOVERS A LIKING FOR LICHENS The easily-missed world of mosses and lichens will be under scrutiny this weekend (Saturday 28th May), when Highland Council’s Ranger, Katy Martin leads a fun family event at Farigaig Forest, Loch Ness-side. Between 2-4pm, Katy hopes to get people active outdoors and learn a bit more about the plants around them. ‘Wee Green Plants’ is a fun family event to look into the wonderful world of small green plants like mosses and lichens - plants that people usually walk by without noticing. Katy Martin, Senior Ranger for Inverness and Nairn said: "Most people are understandably interested in wild animals, birds and flowers, but the world of mosses and lichens is a very fascinating place to explore. "There are some lichens that only exist in areas of zero pollution; others cling to rocks and are centuries old; and others were used for their colourful properties to dye wool in days gone by." Anyone interested in joining this guided walk should meet (Sat 28th May, 2pm) at Farigaig Forest Centre in Inverfarigaig near Foyers on Loch Ness-side (Grid ref NH524 238). The walk is on established paths on various surfaces and slopes and participants are asked to dress warmly with solid footwear. This event is not suitable for dogs. ‘Wee Green Plants’ is part of the Highland Council’s Planning and Development Service ‘Guided Walks Around Inverness and Nairn’ programme of events.
