HMIe Report on Deshar Primary School

In an HMIe report on the 70-pupil Deshar Primary School, Boat of Garten, a range of strengths were identified. The primary school was commended for:

bullet

Pupils' keeness to learn;

bullet

The caring ethos and a commitment to meeting all pupils' needs;

bullet

Teamwork amongst all staff which focused on improvement;

bullet

Quality of pupils' attainment in writing;

bullet

Relationships with parents, School Board, PTA and the local community;

bullet

The leadership of the head teacher.

In an outstanding report, the Inspectors judged that all aspects of the work of the school represented very good or good practice. They recognised the high performance, the strong record of improvement and the very effective leadership of the school.

The Inspectors also made a limited number of recommendations for the school which included improving pupils’ skills in problem solving and enquiry in mathematics. The school was also asked to improve the pupils’ skills in using information and communications technology. The school accommodation and facilities were judged to be fair and the Inspectorate will remain in contact with the education authority regarding aspects of the accommodation.

Commenting on the reports Mrs Aileen Grant, Head Teacher, said: "I am very pleased with the report and I feel they reflect the positive ethos of the school, the opportunities we provide for all children to achieve, positive teamwork and partnership with the parents and community and our commitment to improving the school.”

Mr Angus Gordon, Highland Councillor for the Boat of Garten Area area, said: "Boat of Garten is very lucky to have such a super school which makes excellent use of its limited facilities."

Mr Malcolm Taylor, the chairperson of the School Board, said: “The members of the School Board are not surprised with the findings of the report with regards to the workings of the school, the commendable way in which the staff work and the obvious high level of education available to the pupils.”
