SCHOOL CELEBRATES CO-OPERATION AND LEARNING

Primary pupils from Carr-Bridge are being rewarded for their initiative and endeavour in setting up a new school and community library co-operative by being awarded a significant grant to develop their enterprise.

On Monday night (21 March), the board of pupil directors who run the library, will be presented with a cheque for £1,500 from the Scottish Co-op Community Dividend Award Scheme to meet the cost of installing a computerised cataloguing and lending system.

The ceremony at the school also marks the achievement of the pupils, supported by staff and parents, in extending the former school library and transforming it into a library co-operative and strategies employed at the school to support learning.

Guests will have the opportunity to view the library and other examples and demonstrations of work developed by children working co-operatively on reading and writing tasks.

David Richard-Jones, secretary of the Co-op's Northern Scotland Area Committee, commented: "Having seen the innovative way this project has come to fruition, we are delighted to support it fully.”

Guest speaker will be Kevin Logan, The Highland Council's Development Officer for the Assessment is for Learning Project, who will talk about a new co-operative partnership between pupils and teachers in the assessment of written work.

Bill Sadler, who provides additional support for learning and teaching in the school, said:  "This school is already at the forefront of national developments in education.  It has been acclaimed as a health promoting school of the highest order and is recognised as a leader in building on the multiple intelligences of pupils.  Basic literacy and numeracy skills are at the core of work in the school and this is greatly enhanced by a number of co-operative strategies."

The evening is being supported by Scottish Co-op, who have provided a range of Fair Trade products to refresh guests and provide an awareness of the Fair Trade Mark of which the Co-op is the country's leading promoter.
